The White Star Award

Honestly, I am writing this post becuase I am sick of opening my blog and having LAZER EYES pop out at me! So, I wracked my brain about what I could blog about and it occurred to me that I have not bragged about Ben's basketball award yet!

Ben played a season of Upward Basketball and had a great time. He is a good ball handler and I think he will really excell at playing ball. What he really excelled out tho was his sportsmanship. His coach just loved him and raved about what a good boy Ben is and how he is so kind and positive.

A little background on Upward, it is a Christian based basketball program that is handled thru a church here in town, they have a heavy focus on Christ and fellowship. In fact, during practice each week, the coach stops his team and gives a devotional and the kids memorize scriptures. One week, the coach asked the kids where they can find the word of God. Ben raised his hand and said with enthusiasm "in the Book of Mormon". Clearly the coach was expecting the Bible to be the answer. We had a fun missionary opportunity there!

Anyways, at the end of the season, the coach chooses 1 player from his team to receive the "white star award", this is for exceptional character and Christ-like behavior. The coach chose Ben! Then, out of the 4 first grade teams, 1 kid is chosen to receive the "white star trophy" at the big awards night. Ben got it! Here is what the coach said about Ben. . .

"Ben exhibited greatness in many ways this season. Ben is a very
good player but always remembers to include his teammates in the success he
enjoys. Whether it is making the extra pass or helping a teammate up from
the floor, he showed the heart of a servant-leader. He also showed
Christ-like behavior in the way he competed against his opponents. On
numerous occasions I saw Ben check on the well-being of a competitor
regardless of the game situation. Ben was a real asset to our team and
everyone benefits from being around him."

Obviously, it felt good as a parents for our son to receive this award. We are proud of Ben and the good choices he is making! Now, if we can just get him to act this way at home. . .
