An update by Jill
It has been awhile since I've written anything. Don did great on his travelougue of our recent trip to Idaho and Utah and I am sure you have noticed a plethura of photos from said trip. We did have a good time and we thank the Putnams and Hobsons for their kindness and sacrifices in making this trip possible, many wonderful memories were made and we are grateful! A special thanks to my Dad who drove home with me and the kids, what an adventure!
We have been back for almost two weeks and are enjoying the slow pace of summer. We are currently undergoing swimming lessons each morning and the kids are loving it and doing great.
We had the missionaries over for dinner the other night and so all afternoon I had to keep telling the kids "don't mess up the table, it is for the missionaries, or don't eat the cookies, they are for the missionaries", etc, etc. So, later on when the missionaries were sharing a scripture with us in the living room, Erick was acting up and I told him he had to wait until the missionaries left to get whatever it was he wanted. He stood up in front of the missionaries and said while pointing to the door "missionaries, GO HOME!" Poor missionaries, they get rejected all day while tracting only to now be told to leave by a 2 year old in a member's home. We all got a good laugh!
Now on a more serious note. I had an experience I wanted to share. Upon returning home from my trip, I was frustrated and wondering how I was going to deal with the four kids again all by myself the whole rest of the summer (what a complainer I am). Anyway, the weekend I got home, a friend from out of town was visiting and so a bunch of us went out to dinner and to a movie. One friend had had my Emma over to her home the day before to play and this friend told me that Emma had told her all about the new movie we had watched in the car several times coming home from our trip. She said that Emma went on for about ten minutes and that the movie really sounded interesting. I was touched that my friend would have listened to Emma for that long and not only listened but could tell me the plot of the movie (meaning, she really probably sat down and looked and listened to Emma.) I immediately thought about myself. Did I know what that movie was about despite the number of times Emma had told me about it? No, because I didn't sit and listen to her. Now, movie aside, I spent the rest of the evening with my friends enjoying being with them but thinking about Emma. She is almost 7 and soon she probably won't even want to tell me about that movie she saw or the boy she likes or the scripture she learned in seminary. I made a vow to sit and listen to my children and to enjoy this summer with them and every day with them.
One other random thought. . . I am reading a wonderful book on parenting and I highly recommend it. I have read many a book on parenting and this one is excellent. It is called "The Power of Positive Parenting" by Glen L. Lathum. It is sure to be of help to anyone with children!
Now for the most important news of the day, it is our sweet Camille's first birthday today and we love her so much! How blessed we are to have her in our family, she brightens our lives each day and I thank my Heavenly Father for sending her to us! Happy Birthday sweet lady!
